Changemaker 5: Harriet Tubman

Today's changemaker is Harriet Tubman, who was a friend of Frederick Douglass. She escaped enslavement and led other enslaved people to freedom by acting as a conductor on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War and became a nurse. Tubman also provided crucial information about the Confederate Army to Union commanders. In a letter written in 1868, Douglass wrote to her: "I have received much encouragement at every step of the way. You, on the other hand, have labored in a private way." After the Civil War, Tubman opened Harriet Tubman Home for Aged & Indigent Negroes to continue her humanitarian work. Make sure to take a minute to read up about this amazing changemaker!
